By Sea

The picturesque journey up the Mystic River should take approx. 30 minutes and will meet every expectation of a New England river scene. You will first pass by historic Noank, with its rich fishing heritage and many beautiful captains' residences scattered along the river banks. Next you'll cruise past Six Penny Island, which is a tidal wetland and home to a great variety of marine life. If you look closely, you may be lucky and catch a glimpse of majestic herons, egrets and ospreys.
The mouth of the Mystic River must be approached from the east or west, as there is an island (Ram Island) directly south of the channel entrance. The channel is clearly marked. You should have no problem if you practice good seamanship: follow the marks, keep track of visible landmarks and stay in the channel.
Unless you have kept up with the Coast Guard's "Notice to Mariners", you might find that the marks are not exactly where your chart says they are. This is a common problem in all inland waters, because the charts are not updated as frequently as the buoys are relocated.
About a half-mile north of Mason's Island, you'll come to the Amtrak railroad bridge (vertical clearance is 8 feet mhw). The railroad bridge is usually open to river traffic and closes briefly to allow trains to pass. You may hail the bridge tender on VHF # 13, "Mystic River Railroad Bridge", to inquire about the opening schedule.
Fort Rachel Marina is located on the west bank of the Mystic River just north of the railroad swing bridge.
Please hail our Dock Master on VHF # 09 prior to passing through the railroad bridge. The Dock Master will give you your slip assignment and further docking instructions.
